The Best Phone I ever had!!!! July 1, 2010 Francisco Jose Ayala (El Salvador) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a really great phone. It has everything you need to manage you life outside the office plus you get a really well constructed phone. It is really elegant and stand out from the ordinary plastic phones.
Some people said that the symbian OS is outdated but if you install a good Theme(Like Steel Black or tehkblack) and Handy Shell App you can get a really nice interface.
The E72 is the replacement of this phone but it dosent have the built quality of the e71. The e72 has a faster processor, 5 mp camara and 3.5 mm jack.
The keyboard is really nice and soft. And you have lots and lots of apps from [...] so you can extend the funcionallity of the phone.
If you need a case for this phone i recomend the boxwave E71 Clip that you can find in Amazon. It looks really nice.
The phone comes with QuickOffice so can read and edit word, excel and powerpoint files, if you need to open the new version of this type of files you can get a free upgrade from Nokia so you can open office 2007 files.
Really nice phone with multitasking of all apps not just a few.
The World's First Submersible Cell Phone? June 29, 2010 Robert Doyle (Phoenix, Arizona) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Note update below regarding repair service.
This past weekend (June 27) my wife dropped her Nokia E71-2 (352925-02-198201-4) into the deep end of our pool. Clad only in a leather Krusell Classic Multidapt Leather Case with SpringClip for Nokia E71 (Black) case (it helped keep water out, but is definitely not waterproof), her phone sat in eight feet of chlorinated water for several minutes until she could get the pole and net from the garage to fish it out.
Understandably upset, she dried the phone out with a hair dryer, but didn't tell me for several hours. When she finally told me she'd dropped her phone into the pool, I laughed and told her I wasn't mad, but more curious to see if it would work.
I put a new battery into my wife's E71 and to my surprise the phone turned on. I then called her number and she could answer. She could call out if she used her contacts manager as the "3" key intermittently turned itself on and the "9", "u", apostrophe, menu and calendar keys didn't work.
I was about to purchase a new E71 from Amazon when I thought to spray the keypad with contact cleaner. After several applications all the keys worked. I've tested all functions and applications I could find and all work. There is heavy condensation behind the screen which slightly distorts images, but it doesn't seem to affect operation of the phone.
Prior to this watery escapade, I've been extremely impressed with the solid build of the E71-2 (manufactured in Finland). I've dropped my E71 uncounted times in the twenty months I've owned it including from ladders, down steep desert trails and onto the pavement. Of course, the Krusell case helped protect my E71 from scratches and has cushioned its falls.
Nonetheless, my E71 has always worked despite my clumsiness. It rarely crashes (pun not intended), and is quite versatile (I wrote and edited a large portion of a 30,000 word book on it). The weakest feature of the phone is the camera, but it worked well enough for a quick online report on a recent video shoot for my company (shown here).
I look forward to acquiring the new Nokia N8 (or may wait for a MeeGo based phone) to use as a media phone, but will keep my E71 as my primary communication phone. Unless I run over it with my car (always a possibility with me), I expect to have it for a very long time.
Obviously, I don't recommend that anyone test the submersibility of their E71, but if you do happen to drop it into deep water the odds are very good you won't be buying a new phone.
UPDATE (July 2): Moisture in the phone migrates especially when the phone moves from Arizona heat (110 degrees currently) and air conditioned locations. The moisture interferes with the keypad requiring a daily application of contact cleaner in the afternoon which quickly returns the keypad to full operation. The screen is looking less waterlogged.
UPDATE (August 19): After weeks of spraying contact cleaner into the keypad, it occurred to me that the problem may be damage caused by pool chemicals. I sent the E71 for servicing and the message came back that the phone had corrosion damage. The good news was that the repair would cost only $64.
UPDATE (August 27): Phone arrived in like-new operating condition within five working days of payment for repair. Nokia's repair contractor, PALCO, provided exemplary service.
Great Smart Phone June 11, 2010 Sujith Mathews (Edison, NJ) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was debating whether to get the E71 or E72. From reading various reviews the E72 offered a much faster processor but the E71 was almost $100 cheaper and the reviews were very good. So I decided to buy the E71 over the E72 and save some money.
So far, I am very happy with the E71. The interface is very user friendly and most of the features are easily usable. I like the feature where you calendar entries for the day and reminders/memos etc are displayed on the main screen so you kind of see them every time you look at the phone serving as a reminder of things to get done for the day.
I had a lot of issues initially with the GPS navigation but after doing some research online I figured it out. Basically, I have not signed up for the data plan since I used a pre-paid T-mobile sim card in this phone. Initially it used to take ages (30 minutes plus) to get a satellite signal. Then I went through various settings and disabled the positioning based on AGPS (which requires a data plan) and Blue Tooth leaving only the GPS and Network items checked. Now the phone picks up GPS signals in a few mins. I guess since I had the AGPS checked of, it was trying to position itself by connecting to the GPRS network of T-mobile. The software needs to be made smarter to give up after trying a couple of times and use just the internal GPS receiver for tracking the position. Now that I have only GPS and Network based positioning enabled, it is working just fine. I have compared the directions given by Nokia OVI maps with the built-in GPS in my Honda Pilot and a Garmin unit and the directions are generally the same in all units. I have been using the GPS feature in this phone to navigate around New Jersey and it works fine. The other beauty of this navigation is that maps are free so if you plan to take a weekend trip to France, you can just download the maps for France and delete them after your trip. You need to install the Nokia OVI suite to download the maps. And when you are installing the maps to your phone better to connect with the USB cable than through blue tooth as it will take much longer to transfer map files through blue tooth connection.
The calendar/reminder/memo feature is very easy to use. The thing that I noticed though was Nokia OVI suite doesn't have a build in calendar like the Nokia PC suite, I have in my older laptop. Hence you cannot view your calendar on your PC unless you have Microsoft Outlook installed.
Overall, I am very happy with the phone. The Otter Box sleve that I ordered with the phone fits perfectly as well. I would definitely recommend this phone to anyone who wants a smart phone.
I liked it June 4, 2010 B. G. Leon (San José, Costa Rica) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's an excellent purchase according to the price.
I like to use my phone with WiFi connection and it works good. Maybe I would like that the phone choose the access point by it self (if it is defined), something similar as a PC or notebook works with the wireless connections.
I use to use the phonebook with many and variable options to have multiple phones numbers/emails for a single contact, the calendar for my meetings, tasks and anniversaries (I sincronyze it with my Google Calendar and works fine) and installed some applications for my work and everything is fine.
Speakers volume is excellent, louder than notebook speakers for sure, good for videos, music stored in it or radio.
Camera is not the best, but are you looking for a camera or a smartphone ?
In general, I could say that I'm satisfied with this purchase.
